Meet the Owner

I started Spensley Smart Homes in 2020, but I've been the friend everyone calls about their electronics for a lot longer.

Built on a passion for tech and a desire to help.

I've been into computers and home tech since I was a kid, and I've built out full smart homes for myself at two different residences along the way. The passion came first. The business came when enough people told me I should be doing this professionally.

Today I've completed over 100 installs across the Chicago area, from full home theaters and whole-home audio to small jobs like getting a turntable set up or making a new TV's sound finally work right. No project is too small, and I've yet to meet one that's too weird.

How I work

Most projects start with a call. I'd rather spend 20 minutes understanding what you're actually trying to accomplish than show up with the wrong gear and the wrong plan. Once I know what we're working with, I'll do the research, source the equipment, and come out ready to do the job in one trip when I can.

I work with what you have. If you've already got speakers in the walls, a receiver in a closet, or a system the previous owner left behind, I can often work it into a modern setup rather than starting over. If you're starting from scratch, I'll walk you through the options and recommend a setup that fits your home, your habits, and your budget, not the most expensive thing on the shelf.

Either way, I treat the install like it's going into my own home. Clean cable runs. Wires hidden. Equipment that fits seamlessly into the room.

The kinds of projects I love

Some of my favorite work lately has been helping families settle into homes that came pre-wired by a previous owner. Speakers in the ceiling, mystery boxes in a utility closet, a remote that controls something but nobody's sure what. There's something satisfying about taking a system that's been sitting dormant and turning it into a modern streaming setup the whole family actually uses.

But honestly, the project doesn't have to be big to be worth doing well. Mounting a TV, fixing audio that's never sounded right, getting your smart thermostat to actually talk to the rest of the house. Those jobs matter just as much. If it's bugging you, I want to help you fix it.
